چکیده

In areas that are occasionally inundated by floods, it is essential to know the quantity and density of vegetation that can be allowed while avoiding flooding beyond the intended floodplains. An unsteady flow model was developed for a channel with vegetated floodplains, to take into account the retention effects of the vegetated areas on flood wave conveyance. A one-dimensional (1D) unsteady flow model was combined with Nuding’s method, which takes into account the friction caused by vegetation and the additional resistance caused by the interaction between themain channel andvegetatedareas.Nuding’smethodwas used to compute the total Darcy–Weisbach friction factor for each cross section and each water level as input data for each time step of the flow model. The model was applied to a double-trapezoidal channel, and the results were compared with a traditional model, in which floodplains were considered only as storage. Differences in the conveyance capacity of the channel were found between themodels. q 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Unsteady 1D flow model of a river with partly vegetated floodplains - application to the Rhine River

A relatively simple unsteady flow model was proposed which estimates velocities, friction factors and the components of discharge in the main channel and on the floodplains simultaneously. Bottom roughness of the main channel and the floodplains, the flow resistance of vegetation on the floodplains and the flow resistance caused by the momentum transfer between the main channel and the floodpla...

Rapidly Varied Unsteady Flow in a Small Scale Dry Bed Model

In this paper the rapidly varied unsteady flow caused by the failure of a dam in a rectangular dry bed horizontal channel has been studied both theoretically and experimentally. Experiments with dam-break flows in smooth and rough channel have been carried out. Comparisons have been made between measured depth hydrographs at different stations along the channel and analytical solution of Ritter...

Flow resistance due to lateral momentum transfer in partially vegetated rivers

[1] In the study of natural rivers, accurate conveyance estimation is challenging because of complex cross-sectional geometry and variable flow resistance. The aim of this study was to investigate the additional friction factor due to lateral momentum transfer at the interface of vegetated and nonvegetated channel parts in two rivers: (1) the Rhine River, a large dredged river with partially ve...

Unsteady Numerical Investigations of Flow and Heat Transfer Characteristics of Nanofluids in a Confined Jet Using Two-Phase Mixture Model

The development of high-performance thermal systems has increased interest in heat transfer enhancement techniques. The application of additives to heat transfer liquids is one of the noticeable effort to enhance heat transfer. In this paper two-dimensional unsteady incompressible nanofluid flow in a confined jet at the laminar flow regime is numerically investigated. The Mixture model is consi...

Entropy Generation In an Unsteady MHD Channel Flow With Navier Slip and Asymmetric Convective Cooling

The combined effects of magnetic field, Navier slip and convective heating on the entropy generation in a flow of a viscous incompressible electrically conducting fluid between two infinite horizontal parallel plates under a constant pressure gradient have been examined. Both the lower and upper plates of the channel are subjected to asymmetric convective heat exchange with the ambient fluid. T...
